Protection explained: the safety net behind every financial plan

Most people are happy to insure their car or their phone, yet far fewer protect the thing that pays for everything else: their income and their family's financial security. Protection is the part of a financial plan that keeps everything standing when life takes an unexpected turn.

Life cover

Life cover pays out a lump sum, or a regular income, if you die during the term of the policy. For families and homeowners, it can mean the difference between staying in the family home and facing difficult decisions at the worst possible time.

Critical illness cover

This pays out if you're diagnosed with one of a defined list of serious illnesses. The money can be used however you need, whether that is covering the mortgage, adapting your home, or simply taking the financial pressure off while you focus on recovering.

Income protection

If illness or injury stops you working, income protection replaces part of your earnings until you can return to work or the policy ends. For the self-employed in particular, it can be a vital safety net.

How much cover is right?

There's no single answer. It depends on your responsibilities, your outgoings and what other support you'd have to fall back on. The aim is cover that's appropriate and affordable, not simply as much as possible.

Where advice helps

Policies vary widely in what they cover and exclude. I can review what would happen to you or your family in different situations and research the market to find cover suited to your needs, explaining exactly what it does and doesn't do.
